About the University of the Free State

The University of the Free State is a multi-campus public university. It’s located in the Bloemfontein capital of the Free State and the judicial capital of South Africa. Its motto is “In Truth is the Light of Wisdom”

In 1904 it was first established as an institution of higher learning as a tertiary section of Grey College. In 1950 it was declared an independent Afrikaans language university, which made them change its name to the University of the Orange Free State.

In 1996 the university was fully de-segregated, then it was initially a white-only precinct. It consists of two satellite campuses. In 2010 the first vice-chancellor was appointed.

Former Names of the College and Date they were Changed:

1904-1906 – Grey College

1906- 1940 – Grey University College

1940 – 1950 – University College of the Orange Free State

1950 – 2001 – University of the Orange Free State

At first, UFS accepted only Whites, but in the early 1990s, the first black students were admitted into the school, as apartheid in South Africa began to cease. Majorities of the students of all races supported racial coming together of the housing facilities. And for quite some years UFS was seen as a model school for the integration of students from different races. However, blacks began to form a larger percentage of the student body (85% of the population of the Free State Province) in the time of mid-to-late- 1990s. And they began to feel less eager about continuing traditions from the white-only history of UFS.

The UFS student residences became de facto re-segregated after the 1996 riot. It did not end there, as classes in English and Afrikaans started, classes, became re-segregated as whites became interested in learning the Afrikaans language and blacks interested in learning the English language.

Once again the university faced another era of controversy in late February 2008 because of a video made by four white students at the Reitz residence which was taken to be a protest against racial integration on the campus. The real motive behind this video is yet to be known. The video shows five black workers in the university being subjected to different mock activities, which include being coerced to eat food that has been urinated on. The video was recognized by both South African and international media and condemnation by disapproval from most major political parties in South Africa, this led to riots and racial strife among students of the university. In some of the riots, video threats were made to the white students by the black students.

The council of the university had to close down the Reitz residence cause of the incident and the incident made the University look into racism in education. It was done by the Department of Education of South Africa.

Then the first black president of UFS and the new chancellor then, he was also a strong proponent of intellectual freedom. He subsequently started a process for campus-wide racial integration among students, it also included inviting the four students to continue their studies at the university.

The university was awarded the World Universities Forum Award for the Best Practice in Higher Education which spoke in honor of the harmonization of the student community.

Oprah Winfrey received her honorary doctorate from the University, on receiving her doctorate she said the transformation of the university was “nothing short of a miracle” when talking about the incident and subsequent racial integration.
